Morse Code - How Do We Use It In Our Jewellery?

Morse Code is a detailed system of dots, dashes, and spaces that are used to represent numbers and letters of the alphabet. It is still used today both as a code and as a way to communicate.

It has been around since the 1840's, and is named after Samuel Morse, one of the inventors of the telegraph. There are two versions of Morse Code: the original version and the newer International Morse Code. The international system simplified things by removing the spaces and making all the dashes a standard length.

Selection of Morse Code Bracelets on display cards - the beads are arranged to spell out a hidden message

Morse Code has the advantage that it can be used in just about any circumstance. It works as long as it is possible to create a signal of some sort that can be seen or heard, whether that be a written or symbolic image, flashing a mirror, turning a torch on and off, or even just tapping or banging on something. It is also still used commonly in radio communication and is an important part of training for soldiers.

We designed a unique range of jewellery that uses this Morse Code to create a secret hidden message; our minimalist style bracelets use Japanese Miyuki Beads arranged on silk thread. The beads are arranged to display the dots and dashes of the Morse Code Alphabet to spell out a unique and meaningful message to your special someone, so only the two of you know the meaning. It might be a special phrase, a name, word, star sign, or date for example.
